Ben has been venturing in the African technology and media space since 2003, having launched AfricaNews.com as one of the first pan African news websites. He has done ethnographic research on the emergence of software cultures in Kampala, Uganda, the theoretical foundation to his work setting up the ICT Entrepreneurship East Africa fund at Hivos. Here he guided the first formal investments into the African startup ecosystem backing the formation of projects like the iHub and Ushahidi.
Ben also cofounded AfriLabs in 2009, a pan-African network of innovation hubs, and sits on the board of ActivSpaces, a leading Cameroonian incubator based in Buea and Douala. An angel investor and partner at Sanage Ventures, Ben is also the cofounder of the African Business Angels Network (ABAN).
In 2007 he founded Venture Capital for Africa (VC4A), the leading online platform serving the African startup community.
