Minister of Trade and Industry , Republic of Rwanda
François KANIMBA (Born 1958) was appointed Minister of Trade and Industry of Rwanda on 10th May 2011 after a long career as a banker where he has been serving as the Governor of the Central Bank of Rwanda since 6th May 2002, first Deputy Governor of the Central Bank since June 2000 and World Bank Principal Economist (1995-2000) coordinating the World Bank operations in Rwanda in the areas of Macroeconomic Management and Private Sector Development.
Under his leadership since his appointment as Minister of Trade and Industry, Rwanda is developing new strategies to expand the export bas of the country to reverse the growing trade deficit. Key strategies include developing the Trade Logistics and Distribution Services to transform the current bottleneck of being a landlocked Country into an opportunity by transforming Rwanda into a Regional Trade Logistics Hub and at the same time unlocking the huge potential the Country has in the Horticulture sector.
Graduate as an Engineer in Statistics and Economics from the European Centre for Training Economists Statisticians for Developing Countries (Paris 1983), Mr. KANIMBA François developed a wide expertise in Macroeconomic Management during the 11 years of his professional career (1984-1995) at the Ministry of Economic Planning of Rwanda. He was the Chairman of the Governance Task Force who negotiated the first Structural Adjustment Program in Rwanda supported by the World Bank, the MF and other Development Partners.
Mr. KANIMBA François has been one of the main Architects of Economic reforms implemented by Rwanda in the last 15 years which allowed this Country to be one of the fast growing economies in Sub Sahara Africa.
